Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn located in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. As a young girl the father was a carnival barker, leaving Ruth's mother without a choice other than to be a cleaning woman and waitress to feed the family. Ruth went to school and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. She left school after two years in order to study acting. There were many hurdles to overcome on her chosen career path. Then, in New York she was hired to pose for photos for a publication about crime, but no theatrical job opportunities came up. Following a short time as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back to her home in Massachusetts and leave her position. She made enough money with her ushering duties in the morning, while working at night in the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She studied drama at the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
